Next quarter (Winter 2017), I am teaching the UCSD practicum course COMM 102D: Methods of Media Production Practicum: Practicum in Child Development.
This is a 6-unit course, described as “A combined lecture/lab course on after-school learning, social change, and community-based research. Students are expected to participate in a supervised after-school setting at one of four community labs in San Diego County. Students will learn ethnographic field methods, develop culturally relevant curriculum, and work in diverse settings.” COMM 102D is a part of the “La Clase Mágica”.
La Clase Mágica serves children and adults in under-served neighborhoods throughout San Diego. We pride ourselves in bringing educational resources such as technology, fun curriculum, and college students to help children bridge many of the learning barriers minority populations face in the 21st century. Each site provides an encouraging atmosphere and a safe learning environment for a group of youngsters with big dreams. We hope these dreams can become reality through boosting their self esteem, growing their knowledge, and improving their classroom comprehension. Our culturally and linguistically relevant curriculum is meant to aid each participant at their own learning level and pace.
