COM 381: Special Topics – Latin American Media will focus on contemporary Latin American media and popular forms of political communication. We will concentrate on the history and cultural ascendancy of Latin American television. Throughout the course, we will study the media’s instrumental role during moments of political transition and crisis in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela. We will consider critical debates and concepts relating to mediatization, political conflict, and cultural change in Latin America by looking closely at cases in these countries. We will also survey radio, film, and social media practices across Latin America.
